Women's squash 'on fire' at CSA Team Nationals

NEW HAVEN, Conn. -- The Bates women's squash team pulled off its second upset win in as many days on Saturday in Kurtz Cup play at CSA Women's Team Nationals, upending No. 11 Middlebury 6-3 in the bracket semifinals to advance to Sunday's championship match against Dartmouth.

"Bates is on fire," reads the CSA's Day 2 Evening Report. "On paper, it looks like top-seeded Dartmouth is the favorite, but taking on higher seeded teams doesn’t seem to faze Bates in the least."

A day after defeating No. 10 Williams by a 5-4 score in the bracket quarterfinals, the Bobcats (8-12) received wins from the same five positions in the lineup -- 1, 2, 3, 8 and 9 -- as well as a win at No. 5, to reverse the score of the Panthers' 6-3 win over Bates in the NESCAC Championship third-place match on Feb. 3.

Sophomore All-American Nessrine Ariffin (Penang, Malaysia), senior captain Cheri-Ann Parris (St. Philip, Barbados) and sophomore Myriam Kelly (Bronx, N.Y.) swept the top three spots for the second straight day, with Ariffin and Parris prevailing in four games and Kelly winning in three. At 8 and 9, juniors Rakey Drammeh (New York, N.Y.) and Samantha Matos (New York, N.Y.) also moved to 2-0 on the weekend, with Drammeh winning in three closely contested games (12-10, 11-9, 11-9) and Matos prevailing in the match's only five-gamer, 11-6, 9-11, 7-11, 11-3, 11-3. Sophomore Lesea Bourke (Greenwich, Conn.) won in straight games at No. 5 for Bates.

The Bobcats will vie for their fourth Kurtz Cup title in team history, and their first since 2006, in Sunday's championship match, beginning at 10:30am at Yale. Ninth-ranked Dartmouth swept Bates 9-0 on Jan. 20 at the Yale Round Robin.
