Women's tennis nearly upsets Connecticut College, 5-4

LEWISTON, Maine -- Ryan McManus outlasted senior Liz Fleming (Westport, Conn.) in three sets in the final match of the day at No. 5 singles as Connecticut College defeated Bates College 5-4 in a NESCAC women's tennis match on Saturday at the Wallach Tennis Center.

The visiting Camels, ranked No. 11 in the Northeast, raised their record to 7-9 overall and 2-4 in the NESCAC while the No. 24 Bobcats dropped to 1-4, 4-10.

Bates senior Cecilia Grissa (Doylestown, Pa.) and sophomore Alexandra Piacquad (Yardley, Pa.), the 17th-ranked doubles team in the Northeast, won 8-6 at first doubles over Elyssa Emesellem and Jessica Bender. Bates also received points from Piacquad at No. 2 singles, from junior Caryn Benisch (Huntington, N.Y.) at No. 3 singles, and from sophomore Jean Gulliver (Falmouth, Maine) at No. 6 singles.

Bates plays host to Williams College tomorrow at 10 a.m.
