Senior captain Caryn Benisch
After a four-month break from competition, the women’s tennis team resumes play for their full-length spring season. The Bobcats got a taste of what lay ahead in their quick fall season playing two tournaments and competing in one head-to-head matchup against Babson College.
This season’s squad is extremely young with first-years making up three-quarters of the roster. The sole senior is captain Caryn Benisch (Huntington, N.Y.), with juniors Jean Gulliver (Falmouth, Maine), Alex Piacquad (Yardley, Pa.) and Taylor Smith (Larchmont, N.Y.) rounding out the roster.
In the fall season, Benisch took home a singles victory in the ITA Championships, the team’s first contest of the shortened season. Benisch also recorded a doubles victory with teammate Charlotte Matlock ‘12 (Villanova, Pa.) at the No. 3 spot in Bates’ head-to-head matchup against Babson College. Also, against Babson, first-year doubles tandem Erika Blauth (Hope, Maine) and Brooke Morse-Karzen (Wilmette, Ill.) won their match at second doubles, 9-7. Morse-Karzen also got Bates a point at No. 4 singles.
In the final contest of the season, the annual New England Women's Intercollegiate Tennis Tournament (NEWITT), the doubles team of Piacquad and first-year Meg Anderson (Cohasset, Mass.) defeated teammates and doubles team Benisch and Morse-Karzan in the A Draw First Round Consolation Bracket.
As the spring season is set to begin, Bates will look for their young players to increase their experience at the college tennis level this season. The team, as a whole, will strive to build on the fall season’s success in the spring of 2009.
The Bates women’s tennis team opens their spring season Wednesday, Feb. 18 at Hillsborough C.C. at 3:30pm.
