Women's tennis racks up wins at NEWITT tournament

Competing in the annual New England Women's Intercollegiate Tennis Tournament (NEWITT), the Bates College women's tennis team notched an impressive performance with a plethora of victories to show for themselves.

The Bobcats saw two duos advance to the finals of the A Draw First Round Consolation Bracket at the NEWITT, hosted by Amherst, Smith and Mt. Holyoke. After being defeated in the first round of the A Championship Flight, the Bobcat team of junior Alex Piacquad (Yardley, Pa.) and first-year Meg Anderson (Cohasset, Mass.) ticked off wins over Wheaton, Endicott and Mt. Holyoke before defeating their teammates, senior Caryn Benisch (Huntington, N.Y.) and first-year Brooke Morse-Karzen (Wilmette, Ill.), in the finals, by a 2-1 score (the tournament used Fed Cup scoring, with one point awarded each for two singles matches and one doubles match). Benisch and Morse-Karzen had defeated teams from Springfield, Colby and Mt. Holyoke to make the finals.

Meanwhile in the B Draw, the Bates duo of first-years Erika Blauth (Camden, Maine) and Sangita Murali (South Dartmouth, Mass.) defeated Wheaton in the Round of 32 before dropping into the Second Round Consolation bracket.
