LEWISTON, Maine -- The Bates women's tennis team defeated Mount Holyoke 7-2 on Saturday inside Merrill Indoor Gymnasium, in a non-conference match that took over seven hours to complete. It was the home opener for the Bobcats, who rose to 2-2.
Bates carried a healthy 3-0 lead into singles play with three convincing doubles victories. Junior Meg Anderson (Cohasset, Mass.) and sophomore Nicole Russell (Boca Raton, Fla.) prevailed 8-6 over the Lyons' top pair, senior Natalie Hisang (Pittsford, N.Y.) and sophomore Nahrhee Han (Albertson, N.Y.), in the closest of the three.
Mount Holyoke received singles wins at the third spot, where Maya Sayarath defeated Bates sophomore Ashley Brunk (Phoenix, Ariz.) in a third-set tiebreaker, and at No. 6, where Eman Malik topped Bates first-year Kristen Doerer (Madison, Conn.).
Bates will play host to Smith College tomorrow at 12 p.m. in Merrill.
The Lyons dropped to 3-8. They will play host to American International College on March 24 at 5 p.m.
Sophomore Jacqui Holmes (Harvard, Mass.) came back to win in three sets at No. 1 singles, and also teamed up with sophomore Jenna Burke (Burlington, Mass.) to win at No. 3 doubles. Junior Erika Blauth (Camden, Maine) also went 2-0 on the day, winning at fourth singles and teaming up with Doerer to win at second doubles.
