Women's tennis takes on ranked Vassar, Amherst in one day

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. -- The Bates women's tennis team played against not one but two nationally ranked opponents on Sunday at Vassar College. The 19th-ranked host Brewers defeated the Bobcats 8-0 Sunday morning, followed by a 9-0 loss to No. 2 Amherst on Sunday afternoon, in Bates' first conference match of the year.

Individual results from the Amherst match will be posted when available.

Bates was competitive with Vassar in doubles play. sophomore Nicole Russell (Boca Raton, Fla.) and Ashley Brunk (Phoenix, Ariz.) lost 8-5 at second doubles, while at No. 3 doubles, junior Erika Blauth (Camden, Maine) and first-year Kristen Doerer (Madison, Conn.) lost by an 8-4 score. Blauth played the most competitive singles match of the day at No. 4. No sixth singles match was played between the teams.

Bates (4-7) plays host to Colby in another NESCAC match on Wednesday at 4 p.m. in Merrill Indoor Gymnasium.
