LEWISTON, Maine -- Sixty-four singles players and 32 doubles pairs from 20 colleges around New England will vie for regional titles this weekend at the Wallach Tennis Center, as Bates College hosts the USTA/ITA Division III Women's New England Regional Championship.
The tournament takes place at Wallach, with some first-day matches also held at Lewiston High School, over Parents & Family Weekend at Bates. Winners of the singles and doubles flights will advance to play in the USTA/ITA National Small College Championships Oct. 13-16 in Mobile, Ala.
Doubles play gets started on Friday at 9 a.m., with first-round singles matches getting going at 11:30 a.m.
Results of the matches will be updated throughout each day via Google docs
Complete results at the end of each day will also be posted on the Bates Athletics website
Five members of Bates' women's tennis team will represent the Bobcats in the tournament, in their first competition of the fall season. First-year Elena Mandzhukova (Lisbon, Portugal) is one of 16 seeded individuals out of 64 players in the singles tournament, and is matched up against Maria Pylypiv of Williams in the first round of play. Other first-round singles matches will include Batse senior co-captain Meg Anderson (Cohasset, Mass.) facing seeded player Emily Lombardi of Bowdoin and junior co-captain Jacqui Holmes (Harvard, Mass.) taking on Lyndsey Cook of Wheaton.
Bates also has two doubles teams competing in a 32-team field. Mandzhukova and Anderson will play Middlebury's Burke/Meyers duo in the first round, while senior captain Erika Blauth (Camden, Maine) and sophomore Kristen Doerer (Madison, Conn.) play Nichols College's Dyakiv/Benoit pairing.
