Women's tennis plays well in loss to No. 7 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps

CLAREMONT, Calif. -- No. 7 nationally ranked Claremont-Mudd-Scripps handed the Bates women's tennis team a 9-0 loss on Saturday, in the Bobcats' last of three matches in Southern California.

Despite the final score, Bates (1-2) played the Athenas tough in many of the nine matches on the day. Juniors Ashley Brunk (Phoenix, Ariz.) and Nicole Russell (Boca Raton, Fla.) lost only 8-6 in the most competitive doubles match, and first-year Elena Mandzhukova (Lisbon, Portugal) acquitted herself well in a 6-3, 6-3 loss to the top-ranked singles player in Division III, Kristin Lim. Senior Erika Blauth (Camden, Maine) and first-year Audrey Grauer (Encinitas, Calif.) also won several games in their singles matches.

Bates will next play at Mount Holyoke College on March 3 at 10:30am, followed the same day with a match against Smith College at 2:30pm, also at Mount Holyoke.
