WATERVILLE, Maine -- First-year Elena Mandzhukova (Lisbon, Portugal) won at first singles and teamed with senior Meg Anderson (Cohasset, Mass.) for a win at first doubles as the 30th-ranked Bates women's tennis team took a 7-2 win over Colby in NESCAC women's tennis Thursday.
Anderson was in one of three singles matches to go to pro-set finishes. Anderson lost 7-5 in the first set at second singles, won a tiebreaker 7-6 (5) in the second set, and then took an 11-9 pro-set victory to decide the match against Colby's Tess Perese.
The Bobcats took a 3-0 lead in doubles. Juniors Nicole Russell (Boca Raton, Fla.) and Ashley Brunk (Phoenix, Ariz.) won 8-5 at second doubles, and junior Jacqui Holmes and sophomore Lucy Brennan took an 8-4 decision at third doubles.
Senior Erika Blauth (Camden, Maine) joined Mandzhukova, Anderson and Brennan as Bates' singles winners, winning in 10-2 in the pro-set after splitting the first two sets at fourth singles.
Kathryn Vergeyle and Mckenzie Love won singles matches for Colby (8-8 overall, 0-5 NESCAC).
Bates improved to 9-7 overall and 2-2 in the NESCAC. The Bobcats play host to Connecticut College on Saturday at 10am in another NESCAC match.
