CAMBRIDGE, Mass. -- The Bates women's tennis team opened its brief fall season of competition on Friday at the 2012 USTA/ITA Regional Championships, hosted this weekend by MIT.
Senior team captain Jacqui Holmes (Harvard, Mass.) went 1-1 in singles play at the tournament, routing Alex Cifone of Nichols College 6-0, 6-1 in the first round. Ninth-seeded Lindsay Katz of Tufts then eliminated Holmes in the Round of 32 by a 6-1, 6-0 score.
Meanwhile sophomore Elena Mandzhukova (Lisbon, Portugal), the seventh seed in the field of 64 players, was upset 6-4, 6-1 by Lauren Hollender of Tufts in the first round.
The 32-team doubles tournament featured two Bates pairs, each of whom lost in the first round. Sophomore Audrey Grauer (Encinitas, Calif.) and Holmes fell 8-1 to Amos/Leung of Middlebury. Meanwhile senior Ashley Brunk (Phoenix, Ariz.) and Mandzhukova fell 8-5 to the strong Williams duo of McCoy/Pylypiv.
The Bobcats compete Oct. 12 at the Bowdoin Invitational.
