No. 8 Athenas top women's tennis in California

CLAREMONT, Calif. -- The No. 28 nationally ranked Bates women's tennis team wrapped up its weeklong trip to California on Saturday, with a 9-0 defeat at No. 8 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps.

The Athenas (3-0), who also rolled past No. 22 Brandeis 9-0 on Friday, allowed Bates only one game combined in the three doubles matches to set a dominant tone. Singles play was more competitive, particularly at No. 4 singles, where senior Ashley Brunk (Phoenix, Ariz.) pushed Caroline Ward to an extra seventh game in the second set. Winning three games apiece were senior captain Jacqui Holmes (Harvard, Mass.) at No. 2 singles, junior Lucy Brennan (Wellesley, Mass.) at No. 3 and sophomore Audrey Grauer (Encinitas, Calif.) at No. 6.

February Break in California now complete -- Bates lost 7-2 at UC Santa Cruz on Monday, then won 8-1 over Occidental on Wednesday -- the Bobcats (1-2) will next take on Mount Holyoke in Merrill Gymnasium next Saturday, March 2 at 11am.
