LEWISTON, Maine -- The No. 28 nationally ranked Bates women's tennis team played its first outdoor home match of the season Monday on a chilly evening at Wallach Tennis Center, posting an 8-1 NESCAC victory over rival Colby.
The Bobcats (5-7, 1-2 NESCAC) swept doubles play, but only after a marathon match was decided at No. 1 doubles. Sophomore Elena Mandzhukova (Lisbon, Portugal) and senior Ashley Brunk (Phoenix, Ariz.) prevailed in a tiebreaker there over Colby's Sarah Wiener and Tess Perese, sending Bates into singles play with a 3-0 lead.
Three singles matches went into third-set tiebreakers in the well-contested match, with Bates prevailing in all three: Brunk at third singles, senior Nicole Russell (Boca Raton, Fla.) at No. 4 and junior Kristen Doerer (Madison, Conn.) at No. 6. Mandzhukova and senior Jacqui Holmes (Harvard, Mass.) won in straight sets at first and second singles, respectively. Colby won its lone point of the day at No. 5 singles, where Sally Holmes prevailed over Bates sophomore Audrey Grauer (Encinitas, Calif.).
Bates plays at No. 1 Amherst on Wednesday at 4pm, in what will be the Bobcats' second meeting with the Lord Jeffs in 12 days.
Colby (10-6, 1-4 NESCAC) plays at Williams on Sunday at 10:30am.
