TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- The Bates College women's distance medley relay team took eighth place Friday night at the NCAA Division III Indoor Track and Field Championships, earning an All-America award and breaking the school record in the event for the third time this season.

Bates' quartet -- first-year Katie Bash (Wallingford, Pa.) in the 1,200-meter leadoff leg, sophomore Izzy Alexander (Harvard, Mass.) in the 400, senior Jen Caban (Bedford, Mass.) in the 800 and senior Kathryn Moore (Pelham, N.H.) in the 1,600 -- ran a time of 12:03.29 to beat out Bowdoin (12:11.38) and Wartburg (12:24.64) for eighth place. The time sliced 1.92 seconds off of the previous school record of 12:05.21.

"They did such a good job. They've had an unbelievable season coming together to accomplish this, and I'm so proud of them," said head coach Jennifer "Jay" Hartshorn.

Moore now becomes the first Bates female to gain All-America honors in all three seasons (not to mention three consecutive seasons). In 2006 she also achieved the honor in outdoor track (in the 3,000-meter steeplechase) and in cross country. Alexander, Bash and Caban are All-Americans for the first time.

Wisconsin-Platteville shaved 7.20 seconds off the Division III meet record, followed by Tufts, Amherst, North Central, Williams, Wisconsin-La Crosse, SUNY Geneseo, Bates, Bowdoin and Wartburg.
