LEWISTON, Maine -- The Bates College women's track and field team fully competed for the first time this season and defeated Coast Guard by a 104-52 score Saturday at the Walter Slovenski Track.
Highlights for Bates included sophomore Izzy Alexander (Harvard, Mass.) winning three events: the pole vault (8-0), the 55-meter hurdles (9.76 seconds) and hte 600 meters (1:44.36). Alexander's pole vault put her at No. 6 on Bates' all-time list. Her performance in the 600 qualified her to compete in the New England Division III championships.
Sophomore Jen Marino (Methuen, Mass.) won the long jump and triple jump in 15-1.5 and 33-3.75, respectively, qualifying for New Englands in the triple jump.
First-year Vantiel Elizabeth Duncan (Topsham, Maine) won the shot put at 37-5.25, and qualified for New Englands.
Junior Molly Balentine (Hampden, Maine) and first-year Morgan Maciewicz (Marblehead, Mass.) finished first and second in the mile, at 5:30.89 and 5:31.43, respectively, each qualifying for New Englands.
First-year Katie Bash (Wallingford, Pa.) and and senior Jen Caban (Bedford, Mass.) finished 2-3 in the 1000, at 3:08.41 and 3:09.33, respectively, and both of them qualified for the ECAC Championships.
Bates competes at the Tufts Invitational next Saturday.
