Duncan hits high marks in hammer, shot put at Colby







WATERVILLE, Maine -- Bates sophomore Vantiel Elizabeth Duncan met provisional qualification for the NCAA Championships and recorded lifetime bests in both the hammer throw and shot put Saturday to highlight the Bates women's track and field team's tri-meet with MIT at Colby College.

Bates finished third in the team scoring with 124 points, while MIT scored 143 and Colby 139.

Duncan (Topsham, Maine) threw the hammer 49.11 meters and surpassed her personal record in the shot put by about two feet, at 13.51 meters, taking first place in both events. Duncan also finished fourth in the discus throw (33.05).

Other event winners for the Bobcats included junior Izzy Alexander (Harvard, Mass.) in the 400 hurdles (1:04.57), senior Jen Marino (Methuen, Mass.) in the triple jump (10.65 meters), and the quartet of first-year Dana Lindauer (Needham, Mass.), senior Amy Rosania (Rye Beach, N.H.), Alexander and Marino, who timed in at 4:07.12.

Other highlights for Bates included:

  • Junior Tara Higgins (Jeffersonville, Vt.) was edged at the finish line by Colby's Laura Pomponi in the 400-meter dash, but in an identical time of 1:02.91. Higgins was also third in the 200 (28.60);
  • Alexander was second in the 100 hurdles (16.53), third in the long jump (4.81 meters) and fifth in the javelin throw (18.66);
  • Marino was second in the long jump (4.87 meters);
  • Finishing 3-4-5 for Bates in the 3,000-meter steeplechase were sophomore Esther Kendall (Ridgeway, Ontario), first-year Rachel Vaivoda (Skaneateles, N.Y.) and first-year Megan McClelland (Keene Valley, N.Y.);
  • Sophomore Lily Gordon (Scarsdale, N.Y.) was third in the high jump (1.40 meters) and fourth in the pole vault (2.80);
  • First-year Sara Ellen Godek (Gilford, N.H.), was second in the javelin throw (25.85 meters), sixth in the discus (28.96) fifth in the shot put (9.95)
  • Senior Cassandra Kirkland (Greene, Maine) was third in the discus (34.20), fourth in the shot put (10.01) and fourth in the hammer (41.77);
  • Sophomore Katie Bash (Wallingford, Pa.) was fifth in the 1,500 (4:54.97);
  • First-year Emily Russell (Queensbury, N.Y.) was third in the javelin (18.37 meters).

Bates will next compete at the Aloha Relays at Bowdoin on Saturday, April 19 at 11 a.m.
