Marino sets Bates long jump record for women's track and field

FITCHBURG, Mass. -- Junior Jen Marino set the Bates outdoor long jump record while junior Izzy Alexander and sophomore Vantiel Elizabeth Duncan also won events as a contingent from the Bates College women's track and field team took fourth place out of 18 teams Saturday at the Jim Sheehan Memorial Meet at Fitchburg State College.

Bates, with only 17 athletes competing, scored 106 points, behind Colby (205), Amherst (126) and Keene State (123). Gordon rounded out the top five teams with 45 points.

Marino (Methuen, Mass.) leaped 17 feet and 4 inches to win the long jump and exceed by half of an inch the previous Bates record of 17-3.5 set by Amy Taylor in 1997. Marino set the school indoor triple jump record during the past indoor season.

Alexander (Harvard, Mass.) took first place in the 400-meter dash with a time of 1:00.43. Alexander also took fourth place in the 100-meter hurdles in 17.04 seconds.

Duncan (Topsham, Maine) won the hammer throw with a top mark of 145-08. Duncan also was runner-up in the shot put (3801.25) and placed third in the discus throw (108-11).

Other Bates highlights included:

  • Senior Amy Rosania (Rye Beach, N.H.) took second place in the 800 meters (2:26.60);
  • First-year Lindsay Soule (South Portland, Maine) was fourth in the 400 hurdles (1:11.40) and seventh in in the 100 hurdles (17.65);
  • First-year Sara Ellen Godek (Gilford, N.H.) took fifth place in the javelin throw (89-01);
  • First-year Chloe Bourne (Litchfield, Conn.) took fifth place in the 5,000-meter run (19:57.49).

Bates will next compete at the Colby Invitational next Saturday, April 12.
