Duncan, relays lead Bates women to 7th place at ECAC's







SPRINGFIELD, Mass. -- The Bates College women's track and field team tied for seventh place out of 51 scoring teams at the conclusion of the ECAC Division III Track and Field Championships on Friday. Bates scored 25 team points to tie with Amherst and St. Lawrence and move up from last year's 12th-place showing at the meet.

Senior Vantiel Elizabeth Duncan (Topsham, Maine) recorded a personal record in the shot put with a top effort of 47-1.75, finishing in second place to Alyssa Pirinelli of St. Lawrence, for eight team points.

Other team highlights included the 4x100-meter relay, where Bates broke the team record for the third time this season with a time of 49.50 seconds, good for fifth place and shaving .45 of a second off the record they set at the NESCAC Championships on April 24. Comprising the team were first-year Kristen Poulin (Freeport, Maine), first-year Ansley Flanagan (Roxbury, Conn.), first-year Erin Augulewicz (Eliot, Maine) and sophomore Lizzie Carleton (Westborough, Mass.).

Junior Dana Lindauer (Needham, Mass.) fought off illness to place fifth in the 400-meter dash in a time of 58.11 seconds for four team points.

Bates' 4x400-meter relay team, comprising sophomore Carleton, Flanagan (Roxbury, Conn.), senior Lisa Hartung (Farmington, Maine) and Lindauer, finished in sixth place at 3:59.50.

Senior Katie Bash (Wallingford, Pa.) recorded a personal record in the 5,000-meter run, finishing 10th in 18:29.69. Sophomore Tina Tobin (Lowell, Mass.) took 13th place in the 400-meter hurdles at 1:05.33.

Thursday Recap

Vantiel Elizabeth Duncan placed third in the hammer throw on Thursday at 167-7, while junior Sara Ellen Godek (Gilford, N.H.) placed ninth, just out of the team scoring, at 146-4.

Tina Tobin placed 12th in the preliminary heats of the 100-meter hurdles in 15.77 seconds

Senior Esther Kendall (Ridgeway, Ontario) came in 15th place in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, in a time of 11:36.07.
