Women's indoor track and field starts well at MIT meet









CAMBRIDGE, Mass. -- The Bates College women's indoor track and field team started the 2010 season off in good form, with strong performances across the board contributing to a second-place showing in a tri-meet against MIT and Colby on Saturday. Bates had 127 points, behind MIT (160) and ahead of Colby (97).

Bates swept the top three spots in the long jump, with sophomore Taylor Piers (Falmouth, Mass.) winning at 15-07.50, followed by sophomore Elizabeth Carleton (Westborough, Mass.) in second at 15-02.75 and first-year Erin Augulewicz (Eliot, Maine) in third at 15-02.25. Piers also won the triple jump in 33-00.25.

Bates also swept the top three spots in the weight throw, with senior Vantiel Elizabeth Duncan (Topsham, Maine) placing first at 51-11.75, junior Sara Ellen Godek (Gilford, N.H.) second in 48-01.75 and senior Laura Smith (Boulder, Colo.) third in 41-07.00. Duncan also won the shot put in 42-00.00, while Godek came in third at 35-01.00.

Other Bates highlights included:

  • Carleton took first place in the 55-meter dash in 7.73 seconds.
  • Senior Molly Radis (Peaks Island, Maine) was nipped by two hundredths of a second in the 600 by MIT's Jamie Simmons.
  • Senior Katie Bash (Wallingford, Pa.) placed second in the mile, finishing in 5:20.51.
  • Sophomore Tina Tobin (Lowell, Mass.) finished third in the 55 hurdles (9.05).
  • First-year Lisa Reedich (Harvard, Mass.) took third place in the 1,000 meters, with a time of 3:11.20.

Next weekend Bates hosts the University of Maine, Colby and Southern Maine in a four-team meet. The pentathlon takes place on Friday at 5 p.m., and the rest of the meet starts Saturday at 12 p.m.
