Women's track and field surges to third place at ECACs

NORTHAMPTON, Mass. -- The Bates College women's track and field team surged on Saturday to finish in third place out of 43 teams at the ECAC Division III Indoor Championships at Smith College, the Bobcats' second top-three finish at ECACs in the past three years. Bates scored 50 team points, behind only Ithaca (64.5) and The College of New Jersey (64) and a point ahead of fourth-place Amherst (49).

The Bobcats put on a dominating display in the weight throw on Saturday, scoring a total of 17 points. Senior Vantiel Elizabeth Duncan (Topsham, Maine) won the event at 57-06.50, while junior Sara Ellen Godek (Gilford, N.H.) and senior Laura Smith (Boulder, Colo.) both recorded personal records in the event, with Godek finishing fourth at 52-09.25, enhancing her provisional qualification for the NCAA Championships, and Smith also reaching the finals and placing seventh at 49-11.75.

Meanwhile, senior Molly Radis (Peaks Island, Maine) wrapped up her outstanding indoor track career by placing second in the 500-meter dash at 1:18.83, putting her at No. 2 on Bates' all-time performance list behind former teammate Izzy Alexander '09. Senior Lisa Hartung (Farmington, Maine) also ran an outstanding 500, placing fourth at 1:19.78.

Bates also received big points in a pair of relay races on Saturday: the Bobcats were fourth in the 4x400 relay in a time of 4:03.81, and they also finished fourth in the 4x800 relay at 9:37.96.

Senior Esther Kendall (Ridgeway, Ontario) placed seventh out of 24 runners in the 3,000 meters, with a time of 10:38.10, to score two more crucial points for Bates.

Vantiel Elizabeth Duncan had another strong outing, placing second out of 17 competitors in the shot put with a top effort of 45-05.00, another NCAA provisional qualifying mark and close to her season's best. Sara Ellen Godek placed 15th at 36-06.75.

Sophomore Tina Tobin (Lowell, Mass.) came in 15th in the 55-meter hurdles with a time of 8.83 seconds.

First-year Andrea Remec (Elmira, N.Y.) was seeded 11th in the pentathlon but placed 10th with 2,571 points, 20 points shy of her personal best.

Bates' distance medley relay team of first-year Lisa Reedich (Harvard, Mass.), Lisa Hartung, first-year Bud Arens (Weymouth, Mass.) and Esther Kendall placed 10th overall with its second-best time of the season, 12:48.52.

Bates was also 17th in the 4x200 relay in 1:50.00, the best time this season by the quartet of first-year Kristen Poulin (Freeport, Maine), first-year Ansley Flanagan (Roxbury, Conn.), sophomore Liz Carleton (Westborough, Mass.) and sophomore Georgia Doucette (Cumberland, Maine).
