Women's track and field wins Fitchburg meet, sets relay mark

FITCHBURG, Mass. -- The Bates College women's track and field team continued its impressive start to the outdoor season on Saturday, taking first place out of 17 teams at the Jim Sheehan Memorial Track Meet at Fitchburg State.The Bobcats scored 144.50 points, well ahead of runner-up UMass-Lowell (119.50). Colby (118), Wheaton (Mass.) (87) and Worcester State (78) rounded out the top five.
Among the day's highlights, Bates ran a school record time in the 4x100 relay, at 50.61 seconds. The Bates quartet of first-year Kristen Poulin (Freeport, Maine), first-year Ansley Flanagan (Roxbury, Conn.), first-year Erin Augulewicz (Eliot, Maine) and sophomore Liz Carleton (Westborough, Mass.), beat the former mark of 50.79 set in 1988 by Kim Brandon, Anne Millham, Donna Messina and Anne Cole.
Bates swept the top three spots out of 29 competitors in the hammer throw. Senior Vantiel Elizabeth Duncan (Topsham, Maine) was first at 170-11, followed by junior Sara Ellen Godek (Gilford, N.H.) in second (153.10) and senior Laura Smith (Boulder, Colo.) was third in 143-07.
Duncan also placed first out of 35 in the discus throw (120-06), second in the shot put (44-00.50)
Junior Jennifer Mitton (Reisterstown, Md.) won the 5,000-meter run in 19:27.15, while first-year Alicia Fannon (Haverhill, Mass.) took second in 19:38.79.
Bates also won the 4x800 meter relay in 10:13.41.
Other top-three performances included:
- Godek placed third in the shot put (38-09.00).
- Senior Katie Bash (Wallingford, Pa.) was third out of 52 runners in the 1,500 meters, at 4:56.37.
- Sophomore Tina Tobin (Lowell, Mass.) placed third in the 100-meter hurdles in 15.84 seconds.
- Sophomore Lindsay Soule (South Portland, Maine) placed third in the 400-meter hurdles, in 1:10.23.
Bates competes at MIT along with Colby next Saturday at 12:30 p.m.
