Godek, Lindauer, Arens, relays win state titles in women's track and field













GORHAM, Maine -- Four strong indoor track and field teams were showcased Friday night at the State of Maine Women's Indoor Championships at the University of Southern Maine. Despite several winning performances by the Bobcats, Bates finished in fourth place. Bowdoin won the meet with 203 points, followed by Colby (157), Southern Maine (116) and Bates (104).

Senior Sara Ellen Godek (Gilford, N.H.) won her two events for Bates, staying undefeated on the year in both the shot put (41-07.25) and the weight throw (52-10.00).

Fellow senior captain Dana Lindauer (Needham, Mass.) claimed first place for Bates in the 600, finishing in 1:38.69. Sophomore Nora Hanagan (Singapore) was fifth in 1:42.58 and senior Lindsay Soule (South Portland, Maine) was seventh in 1:45.09.

Sophomore Bud Arens (Weymouth, Mass.) won the 800 with a time of 2:21.59. First-year Kara Stefaniak (Needham, Mass.) came in seventh in 2:31.81.

The Bobcats also had a strong showing in the 1,000, with first-year Kallie Nixon (Medfield, Mass.) placing a close second place in 3:05.64, 0.16 seconds behind the leader. Sophomore Lisa Reedich (Harvard, Mass.) was third in 3:08.24, and first-year Emily Foden (Mount Airy, Md.) was eighth in 3:22.28.

Bates won the 4x200 relay -- sophomore Ansley Flanagan (Roxbury, Conn.), sophomore Kristen Poulin (Freeport, Maine), junior Liz Carleton (Westborough, Mass.) and first-year Jenny Fucillo (Winthrop, Mass.) -- in 1:50.26.

Bates also claimed first in the 4x400 relay in 4:09.04, behind the legs of Fucillo, Arens, Flanagan and Lindauer.

Other point-scoring performances for Bates included:

  • Sophomore Lindsay Cullen (Newburyport, Mass.) and senior Kerri Leonhardt (Milford, N.J.) were fourth and fifth, respectively, in the 5,000, at 18:52.61 and 19:08.52. Senior Casey Dropkin (Waterville Valley, N.H.) was eighth in 21:18.87.
  • Sophomore Alicia Fannon (Haverhill, Mass.) finished fourth in the 3,000, in 10:47.10, while sophomore Liz Schulze (San Diego, Calif.) was eighth in 11:29.81.
  • Junior Taylor Piers (Falmouth, Maine) took fifth place in the triple jump, at 33-11.50, and was sixth in the long jump, at 16-01.00.
  • Flanagan placed fifth in the 55-meter dash, with a finals time of 7.79, while first-year Jenny Snyder (Scarborough, Maine) and Poulin came in seventh and eighth, respectively, in 7.89 and 7.99. Flanagan also tied for fifth in the high jump, at 4-09.75.
  • A pair of first-years, Alison Travers (Brentwood, N.H.) and Abby Alexander (Harvard, Mass.), finished fifth and sixth in the 400, at 1:04.47 and 1:04.62.
  • First-year Meg Ogilvie (Hopedale, Mass.) placed sixth in the mile at 5:24.98.
  • Sophomore Erin Augulewicz (Eliot, Maine) was seventh in both the long jump (16-00.25) and the triple jump (32-00.00) .
  • Junior Gwynneth Johnson (Portland, Ore.) was seventh in the pole vault, at 8-00.75.
  • Carleton was eighth in the 200, at 28.55.
  • Fucillo was eighth in the long jump, at 15-06.75.

Next weekend, the team competes at the Valentine Invitational at Boston University on Friday, and at the Tufts Invitational on Saturday.
