Women's track breaks two team records, places 6th at NESCACs















MIDDLETOWN, Conn. -- The Bates women's track and field team set two team records en route to a sixth-place finish at the NESCAC Track and Field Championships on Saturday at Wesleyan. The Bobcats scored 70 points at the meet, eight points behind fifth-place Bowdoin but outpacing Amherst (55), Trinity (16), Wesleyan (15) and Hamilton (4).

Senior Dana Lindauer (Needham, Mass.) won the conference title in the 400-meter dash and broke her own team mark in the process, finishing in 57.14 seconds, provisional qualifying time for the NCAA Division III Outdoor Championships. Lindauer's previous team record of 57.94 was set earlier this season.

Bates took second place in the 4x400 relay race and broke the team record in the process, as junior Liz Carleton (Westborough, Mass.), sophomore Ansley Flanagan (Roxbury, Conn.), first-year Jenny Fucillo (Winthrop, Mass.) and Lindauer blazed to a finish in 3:57.12, a whopping 6.49 seconds ahead of third-place Williams. The former school record of 3:58.47 was set last year by Carleton, Flanagan, Tina Tobin and Lindauer.

Lindauer also finished second in the 200 meters, at 25.93 seconds, .29 seconds ahead of third-place Annie Lynch of Williams.

Senior Sara Ellen Godek (Gilford, N.H.), meanwhile, won the NESCAC hammer throw title with a personal-best mark of 161-5, improving her provisional qualification for NCAAs. Godek also took third place in the shot put (39-10.75) and eighth place in the discus (110-7).

Other point-scoring (top eight) performances for the Bobcats included:

  • Bates' 4x100 relay team of sophomore Kristen Poulin (Freeport, Maine), Flanagan, sophomore Erin Augulewicz (Eliot, Maine) and Carleton finished in fourth place in a time of 49.66.
  • Fucillo finished fourth in the 400-meter hurdles, in a time of 1:06.75, while senior Lindsay Soule (South Portland, Maine) came in eighth place at 1:07.79.
  • Sophomore Bud Arens (Weymouth, Mass.) took fifth place in the 800 meters, at 2:14.96.
  • Bates was fifth in the 4x800 relay, at 9:43.78, on the legs of first-year Kallie Nixon (Medfield, Mass.), sophomore Nora Hanagan (Singapore), sophomore Lisa Reedich (Harvard, Mass.) and Arens.
  • Sophomore Lindsay Cullen (Newburyport, Mass.) was fifth in the 10,000 meters, at 38:38.81.
  • Flanagan placed sixth in the 100-meter dash finals in a time of 13.17 seconds, after posting a 12.79 in her preliminary heat.
  • Senior Kerri Leonhardt (Milford, N.J.) placed eighth in the 5,000 meters, at 18:19.66.

Next up for the Bobcats is the New England Division III Outdoor Championships at MIT. The decathlon begins Friday at 12 p.m., and the rest of the meet takes place Saturday at 10 a.m.
