LEWISTON, Maine -- Bates senior Sara Ellen Godek won both the shot put and the weight throw for the second time in as many indoor meets this season, leading the Bates women's track and field team to second place only to Division I Maine in a five-team meet held Saturday at Walter Slovenski Track.

Maine scored 255 points, followed by Bates with 121, Southern Maine with 118, Colby with 97, Bowdoin with 10 and Gordon with 5 (Bowdoin's participation was limited to the pentathlon).

Godek (Gilford, N.H.) registered a 50-foot weight throw to outdistance Southern Maine's Hannah Patterson by a quarter of an inch for first place out of 13 competitors. Godek claimed first in the shot put at 38-11.75.

Bates swept the top five spots in the 400-meter dash: first-year Alison Travers (Brentwood, N.H.) was first in 1:05.06, followed by sophomore Nora Hanagan (Singapore) in 1:05.23, senior Lindsay Soule (South Portland, Maine) in 1:05.34, sophomore Elise Levesque (West Simsbury, Conn.) in 1:06.27 and sophomore Kristen Poulin (Freeport, Maine) in fifth at 1:06.29.

Godek's fellow team captain, senior Dana Lindauer (Needham, Mass.) was Bates' other event winner, taking first in the 600 meter run at 1:42.53.

Other point-scoring (top six) performances for Bates included:

  • Junior Taylor Piers (Falmouth, Maine) came in third in the triple jump (33-09.50) and fifth in the long jump (15-07.75).
  • First-year Jenny Fucillo (Winthrop, Mass.) took third place in the long jump, at 16-01.50.
  • Sophomore Lisa Reedich (Harvard, Mass.) was third in the 800 (2:27.47).
  • Sophomore Alicia Fannon (Haverhill, Mass.) was third in the 3,000 (10:51.24), while first-year Meg Ogilvie (Hopedale, Mass.) was fifth in 11:11.08.
  • Sophomore Bud Arens (Weymouth, Mass.) was fourth in the mile (5:31.45).
  • Senior Kat Collet (Leawood, Kan.) was fifth in the pentathlon, with 2,386 points.
  • First-year Jenny Snyder (Scarborough, Maine) was sixth in the 60-meter dash (8.64).
  • Sophomore Liz Schulze (San Diego, Calif.) was sixth in the 5,000 at 19:51.31.
  • Bates took second place in the 4x400 relay, with Arens, Soule, Fucillo and Travers running the legs.

Next up for Bates is the Terrier Classic at Boston University on Friday, and the USM Invitational on Saturday.
