HADLEY, Mass. -- The Bates women's track and field team had five of its student-athletes receive a total of six All-Conference honors, as the New England Small College Athletic Conference released the All-NESCAC Track & Field teams on Wednesday. The award goes to top-three performances in the 22 events of the NESCAC Track & Field Championships, which took place Saturday at Bates' Russell Street Track.
First-year Sarah Fusco (Cheshire, Conn.) snagged two All-NESCAC honors: one for her third-place finish in the 400-meter run and the other for running the first leg on Bates' first-place 4x800 relay team.
The Bobcats won the 4x800, the final event of the day, by a 5.48-second margin ahead of runner-up Williams, with a winning time of 9:24.86. Joining Fusco in receiving All-NESCAC honors for their performance are sophomore Kallie Nixon (Medfield, Mass.), junior Lisa Reedich (Harvard, Mass.) and junior Bud Arens (Weymouth, Mass.).
Also earning all-conference distinction for Bates is first-year Colby Gail (Topsham, Maine), who tied for third place in the high jump with fellow rookie Hayleigh Kein of Bowdoin, at 5-0.5.
Bates had several near-misses, too, in the All-NESCAC tally, including three fourth-place showings. Arens was fourth in the 800 meters, while junior Lindsay Cullen (Newburyport, Mass.) was fourth in the 10,000 and senior Taylor Piers (Falmouth, Maine) was fourth in the long jump, while breaking the team record with a distance of 17-7.
