CAMBRIDGE, Mass. -- The Bates women's track and field team opened the 2012 indoor season with a strong effort on Saturday, claiming second place among three teams. The No. 5 nationally ranked host Engineers scored 210 points, followed by the Bobcats with 88 and Colby in third with 80.
Junior Bud Arens (Weymouth, Mass.) was one of three event winners for the Bobcats. Arens claimed first place in the the 1000 meters in 3:03.59, 1.50 seconds ahead of MIT's Louise van den Heuvel.
First-year Sarah Fusco (Cheshire, Conn.) won the 800 meters in 2:23.62, and senior Juliana Kirkland (Greene, Maine) won the weight throw in 40-11.5.
Other top-three performances by the Bobcats included:
- Sophomore Holli Kennison (Orono, Maine) placed second in the shot put in 30-9.25.
- Senior captain Lizzie Carleton (Westborough, Mass.) finished third in the 400 meters, in 1:07.07.
- Senior captain Taylor Piers (Falmouth, Maine) took third in the long jump in 15-11.75.
- Bates won the 4x800 relay in 9:50.72, on the legs of Arens, Fusco, sophomore Kallie Nixon (Medfield, Mass.) and junior Lisa Reedich (Harvard, Mass.), winning by more than 15 seconds over runner-up Colby.
The Bobcats will host the Bates Pentathlon on Friday at 3pm, followed on Saturday by the Bates Invitational, which will include Division I Maine, Colby and Southern Maine, among other teams.
