Women's track places 8th in distance medley relay at NCAAs

GRINNELL, Iowa -- The Bates College women's track and field team finished eighth in the distance medley relay race on Friday night at the NCAA Division III Indoor Track & Field Championships, making All-Americans of the quartet of sophomore Kallie Nixon (Medfield, Mass.), senior Tina Tobin (Lowell, Mass.), first-year Sarah Fusco (Cheshire, Conn.) and junior Bud Arens (Weymouth, Mass.).

Moments after seeing their male counterparts take third place in the men's DMR, Bates finished in 11:57.68. Nixon ran the 1,200-meter leadoff leg, followed by Tobin in the 400, Fusco in the 800 and Arens in the 1,600. Arens outdueled Amherst's Keri Lambert for much of the final eight laps for eighth place, with the Bobcats ultimately edging the Lord Jeffs by 1.76 seconds for the final All-America spot. The fifth seed in the race, Bates finished 2.54 seconds behind seventh-place Rowan.

It is the second time Bates has fielded an All-America DMR team -- in 2007, the quartet of Katie Bash '10, Izzy Alexander '09, Jen Caban '07 and Kathryn Moore '07 also finished eighth at NCAAs.

With one day left in the meet but no further events for the Bobcats, Bates is tied with Monmouth (Ill.) and North Central (Ill.) for 34th place at the meet in team scoring.
