Women's track puts three on national All-Academic squad

NEW ORLEANS -- Three members of Bates College's 2012 women's outdoor track and field team were named to the USTFCCCA Division III All-Academic Track & Field team, announced Wednesday by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association.

Winning the All-Academic nod for Bates were Abby Alexander '14 (Harvard, Mass.), Lizzie Carleton '12 (Westborough, Mass.) and Kallie Nixon '14 (Medfield, Mass.).

To qualify for the USTFCCCA All-Academic Track and Field Team, the student-athlete must have compiled a cumulative grade point average of 3.30 and have met either of the following athletic standards: a student-athlete must have competed in an NCAA Indoor or Outdoor Championship or finished the regular season ranked in the national top 35 in an individual event or ranked in the national top 25 (collective listing) in a relay event on the official NCAA POP list provided by TFRRS.org.

Alexander and Carleton each qualified as part of Bates' indoor 4x400 relay team, which ran a 3:57.36 time at Open New Englands at Boston University in February, marking the 22nd-best time in Division III. It is Carleton's second straight year winning USTFCCCA All-Academic honors.

Nixon ran the 1,200-meter third leg of Bates' All-American indoor distance medley relay team, which ranked fifth in the country for its 11:52.07 time at the ECAC Division III indoor championships in March, and placed eighth at indoor nationals in March.

The three Bobcats were among 340 All-Academic selections nationwide, including 37 from NESCAC institutions.
