BOSTON -- Junior Bud Arens (Weymouth, Mass.) ran Bates' first-ever sub-five-minute mile, breaking the former team record by 6.22 seconds, and she helped the Bobcats shatter the team record in the 4x800 relay, to highlight the Bates women's track and field team's day at the all-divisions Open New England Championships at Boston University.

Arens' mile of 4:55.59 was good for seventh overall, and third among Division III athletes. The nine-year-old former team record of 5:01.81 was recorded by Kelley Puglisi '03 in 2003.

Later in the day, Arens anchored the 4x800 relay team to a sparkling 9:14.88 time, good for seventh place out of 19 teams overall, and second among Division III squads. Running the other legs for Bates were first-year Sarah Fusco (Cheshire, Conn.), sophomore Kallie Nixon (Medfield, Mass.) and junior Lisa Reedich (Harvard, Mass.). The former record of 9:22.77 was set in 2007 by Izzy Alexander '09, Katie Bash '10, Jen Caban '07 and Jenna Ligor '10.

Bates also ran a strong 4x400 relay of 3:57.36, 14th overall and fifth in Division III, just 0.17 seconds away from matching the team record. Senior captain Tina Tobin (Lowell, Mass.), junior Ansley Flanagan (Roxbury, Conn.), sophomore Abby Alexander (Harvard, Mass.) and senior captain Lizzy Carleton (Westborough, Mass.) ran the legs.

Junior Lindsay Cullen (Newburyport, Mass.) finished second among Division III runners, and 15th overall, in the 3,000 meters. Her time of 10:21.56 puts her at No. 6 on Bates' all-time performance list.

The Bobcats scored four meet points to place 29th out of 35 point-scoring teams, 13th among Division III teams. Bates competes next weekend at the ECAC Division III Championships, at the New York Armory.
