BOSTON -- Bates senior Elizabeth "Bud" Arens broke the team record in the 800 meters on Friday at the all-divisions Open New England Indoor Championships at Boston University.
Arens (Weymouth, Mass.) finished in 2:12.37, trimming a healthy 1.37 seconds off of the former 800m mark of 2:13.74 set by four-time All-American Izzy Alexander '09 in 2009. Her time was fifth fastest among 27 women, qualifying her for Saturday's final in the event. Arens previously ranked second on the team's all-time performance list at 2:14.37. Coincidentally, Bates' men's and women's team records in the 800 fell on the same night, with James LePage '13 setting the new men's standard.
Sophomore Sarah Fusco (Cheshire, Conn.) placed 12th in the 800, in 2:16.22.
Other Bates highlights from Friday included the 5,000 meters, where senior Lindsay Cullen (Newburyport, Mass.) ran a season-best 17:54.05 to finish 11th out of 28 runners, while junior Mira Carey-Hatch (Laconia, N.H.) was 15th in 18:04.28. Cullen was the second-fastest Division III runner in the race, Carey-Hatch fifth-fastest.
In the 1,000 meters, first-year Isabelle Unger (Charlotte, Vt.) placed 18th in 3:02.92, entering the team's all-time top 10 performance list in the event.
