Fusco, Arens pace women's track at New Englands

GORHAM, Maine -- Sophomore Sarah Fusco and senior Bud Arens won the 600 and 1,000 meter races, respectively, leading the Bates women's track and field team to 11th place among 26 scoring teams at the New England Division III Women's Indoor Track & Field Championships Saturday at the University of Southern Maine.

The Bobcats occupied a tight pack in the final scoring with 34 points, a point shy of both USM and Amherst for ninth place and only 10 points behind the meet's fifth-place team, Rhode Island College. Tufts won the team title with 116 points.

Fusco (Cheshire, Conn.) broke her own team record in the 600 meters with a winning time of 1:36.14, trimming .37 seconds off the mark she set last year. Fusco crossed the finish line 1.35 seconds ahead of runner-up Samantha Bissonnette of Tufts.

Arens (Weymouth, Mass.) leapfrogged from seventh into second place on Bates' all-time performance list in the 1,000, behind only Kelley Puglisi's 2:57.68 from 2003.

Arens also placed seventh in the mile, timing in at 4:59.93 for two more team points.

Other top-eight performances by the Bobcats -- scoring team points and earning All-New England honors in the process -- were submitted by the following:

  • Bates took third place in the 4x800 relay in a time of 9:46.37. The Bobcats were led off by first-year Isabelle Unger (Charlotte, Vt.), followed by senior Lisa Reedich (Harvard, Mass.), first-year Isabel Ferguson (Bainbridge Island, Wash.) and anchored by junior Kallie Nixon (Medfield, Mass.).
  • Unger also placed eighth in the 800 meters at 2:21.12, an identical time to seventh-place Kate Cullen of Wesleyan.
  • First-year Mary Krathwohl (Ipswich, Mass.) placed sixth in the triple jump, with a top effort of 35-8, moving her into third place on Bates' all-time performance list.
  • The Bobcats' quartet of senior captain Ansley Flanagan (Roxbury, Conn.), Fusco, first-year Elena Schroeder (Clinton, Conn.) and first-year Melanie Ehrenberg (Rumson, N.J.) placed seventh in the 4x400 relay, in 4:04.53.

Bates competes at Open New Englands next weekend at Boston University.
