Volleyball team tops Hamilton, loses to Middlebury

BRUNSWICK, Maine -- The Bates College volleyball team split a pair of matches Saturday at Bowdoin College's NESCAC Weekend, defeating Hamilton 3-1 before dropping a 3-0 decision to Middlebury.

The Bobcats topped the Continentals for their first conference victory of the season by a score of 30-21, 30-22, 25-30, 30-25. Sophomore Beth Billington (St. Paul, Minn.) led the offense with 15 kills to go with four blocks, while senior setter Katie Graeff tallied 38 assists. First-years Elise Edmonson (Crystal Lake, Ill.), Tess Dokus (Salem, Conn.) and Liz Leberman (Concord, N.H.) had nine kills apiece.

Middlebury defeated Bates by a score of 30-20, 30-12, 30-20. Highlights for the Bobcats (5-3, 1-2 NESCAC) included 11 kills by Leberman, seven kills from Edmonson and 25 assists by Graeff.

Bates hosts the University of Southern Maine on Sept. 19 at 7 p.m.
