LEWISTON, Maine -- The Bates College volleyball team started off strong in both of its matches Saturday in the Mid Coast Invitational, but suffered come-from-behind losses to Gordon (3-1) and Wheaton (3-2) at Alumni Gymnasium.

The nine-team Mid Coast Invitational was co-hosted by Bates and Bowdoin, with all of Saturday's action taking place at Bates.

Facing Gordon (13-7) in their morning matchup, the Bobcats came out like gangbusters, with 22 kills against only 2 attack errors in the first game en route to a 30-25 game victory. But the Fighting Scots roared back to take the ensuing three games by scores of 30-25, 30-21 and 30-27.

Leaders for Bates in the match included sophomore Liz Leberman (Concord, N.H.) with 20 kills and 19 digs, senior Brittany Clement (Gobles, Mich.) with 42 assists and 24 digs, sophomore Avery Masters (Mill Valley, Calif.) with 10 kills and sophomore Brit Johnston (Winter Park, Colo.) with 25 digs.

Bates similarly started out strong against Wheaton (16-8), taking the first two games by scores of 30-28 and 30-22. The Lyons clawed back with 30-27 and 30-28 victories in the next two games, and prevailed in a nail-biter of a fifth game, 19-17.

Leaders for the Bobcats (5-15) included Leberman (23 kills, 16 digs), Clement (55 assists, 21 digs), Masters  (15 kills, 4 blocks), Johnston (35 digs) and sophomore Tess Dokus (Salem, Conn.) with 13 kills. Sophomore Elise Edmonson (Crystal Lake, Ill.) missed the weekend's action with a concussion.

Leberman was elected to the seven-member All-Tournament Team by participating teams' head coaches. Abby Blasco of Brandeis was named the tournament's Most Outstanding Player.

Bates has a NESCAC weekend at Middlebury College next weekend, starting with a match against the host Panthers Friday at 6 p.m.
