Volleyball takes two losses vs. NESCAC iron

WATERVILLE, Maine -- The Bates College volleyball team lost a pair of matches against some of the tougher teams in the NESCAC Saturday at Colby College. The Bobcats fell to Connecticut College 3-0 (30-18, 30-20, 30-23) in the early afternoon match, then 3-0 (30-26, 30-18, 31-29) to Trinity College.

The Camels of Connecticut College advanced to 7-0 overall and 2-0 in the NESCAC with their win over the Bobcats, who at the end of the day stood 1-6 overall and 0-3 in conference play. Sophomore Liz Leberman (Concord, N.H.) led the Bobcats with 12 kills to go with 10 digs, while sophomore Brit Johnston (Winter Park, Colo.) racked up 20 digs. Sophomore Elise Edmonson (Crystal Lake, Ill.) contributed 10 assists, nine digs and six kills, and first-year Katelyn Gilardi (Prides Crossing, Mass.) made two service aces. Senior Brittany Clement (Gobles, Mich.) had a team-high 18 assists.

The Bobcats put up a good fight against Trinity, scoring 26 points in the first game and taking the Bantams (3-3, 1-1 NESCAC) to 31-29 in the third game. Leberman led the team in kills (12) and digs (18), while Edmonson had another solid all-around performance with eight kills, 15 digs and 12 assists. Clement had a team-high 16 assists and Dokus added seven kills.

Bates will next play at the MIT Invitational on Sept. 21-22 against opponents yet to be determined.
