Volleyball team heads off Newbury for first win

PLYMOUTH, N.H. -- Bates College grabbed its first victory of the season while taking one out of two matches Saturday at the Days Inn of Campton Volleyball Tournament at Plymouth State University.

Bates (1-2) started the day with a 3-2 loss to Lasell College, by scores of 30-26, 26-30, 30-28, 17-30, 15-11. Sophomores Tess Dokus (Salem, Conn.) and Avery Masters (Mill Valley, Calif.) shared the team lead with 11 kills apiece, while sophomore Elise Edmonson (Crystal Lake, Ill.) racked up nine kills to go with 22 assists. Senior Brittany Clement (Gobles, Mich.), sharing setting duties with Edmonson, had 19 assists, while sophomore Liz Leberman (Concord, N.H.) had nine kills.

The Bobcats came back in the afternoon with a convincing 3-0 victory over Newbury College, by scores of 31-29, 30-18, 30-19, behind stellar all-around efforts from Edmonson (8 kills, 16 assists, 10 digs, 4 aces), Clement (19 assists, 7 digs, 4 aces) and Leberman (9 kills, 14 digs, 2 aces). Dokus had seven kills, Brit Johnston (Winter Park, Colo.) had 11 digs and Masters, senior Jenn Linton (West Redding, Conn.) and first-year Phoebe Reed (Brooklyn, N.Y.) had five kills apiece.

Edmonson was named to the All-Tournament Team for her all-around efforts.

Bates plays at Colby on Wednesday at 7 p.m. in a non-conference matchup.
