CASTINE, Maine – The Bates College volleyball team earned a straight-set non-conference victory at Maine Maritime Academy on Wednesday night, winning by scores of 25-16, 25-17, 25-21.
Junior Tess Dokus (Salem, Conn.) led the Bobcats with 9 kills while first-year Chrissy Gee (San Francisco, Calif.) added 8 kills. First-year setter Grace Haessler (Portland, Ore.) collected 31 assists and 5 aces, first-year Olivia Schow (Costa Mesa, Calif.) added 7 kills and 2 aces, and senior Beth Billington (St. Paul, Minn.) tallied 6 kills and 3 blocks.
Junior middle hitter Amy Young played well for the Mariners, collecting 6 kills, 4 digs and 4 blocks. Lauren Sakahara and Katherine McMillan each had 9 digs and Heather Moore collected 14 assists.
Bates dominated the first set, getting out to a quick 9-1 start and cruising to the victory, but the remaining two games were closer. In the second set MMA held an early lead until the serving of Bates became too much for the Lady Mariners to handle losing by eight points. In the final set of the night, the Mariners led virtually the entire game before Bates called a timeout trailing 19-21. The Bobcats came storming out of the break and rattled off the next six points to win the game and the match.
The loss drops MMA to 1-5 on the season, while Bates improves to 2-2 on the year. Next up for the Bobcats is a pair of matches Saturday at Bowdoin College. Bates will play the host Polar Bears at 11 a.m., followed by a 1:30 matchup against Colby.
