BRUNSWICK, Maine -- The Bates College volleyball team defeated both Keene State and Emmanuel by 3-1 scores on Saturday, the final day of the Mid Coast Volleyball Classic, co-hosted by Bates and Bowdoin. With a 3-1 record on the weekend, Bates took third place out of eight teams in the tournament, with junior Liz Leberman (Concord, N.H.) earning All-Tournament honors.
Bates defeated Keene State by scores of 17-25, 25-16, 25-22, 25-21, behind 9 kills by junior Avery Masters (Mill Valley, Calif.) and 8 apiece by Leberman and senior Beth Billington (St. Paul, Minn.). Leberman also had a team-high 17 digs. Junior Tess Dokus (Salem, Conn.) and first-year Chrissy Gee (San Francisco, Calif.) came up with 7 kills apiece.
Against Emmanuel, Bates again rallied after dropping the first set, winning by set scores of 17-25, 27-25, 29-27, 25-15. Billington had a team-high 13 kills, while first-year setter Grace Haessler (Portland, Ore.) had 47 assists with 9 digs and 4 aces. Leberman came up with 10 kills and 14 digs, and Dokus chipped in with 11 kills and 6 digs. Junior Kira Kramlich (San Francisco, Calif.) tied for the team lead with 14 digs, and Gee added 6 kills, 12 digs, 4 aces and 3 blocks in the win.
Bates evens its record at 9-9 and will next play host to Bowdoin, which took first place in the Mid Coast, in a NESCAC match on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
