Volleyball dominates Bates Classic with pair of sweeps







LEWISTON, Maine -- The Bates College volleyball team wrapped up the Bates Volleyball Classic with a 3-0 record, after sweeping Johnson & Wales and Maine Maritime Academy by 3-0 scores on Saturday.

The Bobcats (15-7) defeated JWU by scores of 25-13, 25-20, 25-23 on Saturday morning, then swept MMA 25-13, 25-17, 25-19 in their afternoon match.

Bates put four players on the seven-member All-Tournament Team, with senior Tess Dokus (Fairport, N.Y.), sophomore Grace Haessler (Portland, Ore.), senior Liz Leberman (Concord, N.H.) and senior Avery Masters (Mill Valley, Calif.) all earning recognition.

Leberman had a team-high eight kills and eight digs against JWU, while Haessler passed out 30 assists. Dokus and Masters had seven kills apiece, with Masters adding two blocks.

In the win over Maine Maritime, Haessler dished out 43 assists. Dokus took the team lead in kills with 12, while Masters and sophomore Chrissy Gee (San Francisco, Calif.) added 10 apiece. Leberman had a team-high 12 digs along with seven kills, and senior Brit Johnston (Winter Park, Colo.) added 11 digs and three service aces.

The Bobcats wrap up their season next weekend with three NESCAC matches at Hamilton College. They'll take on Williams on Friday at 8 p.m., Hamilton on Saturday at 11 a.m. and Middlebury on Saturday at 1:30 p.m.
