Volleyball splits NESCAC matches to finish 16-9





CLINTON, N.Y. -- The Bates College volleyball team finished the 2009 season with a pair of NESCAC matches played at Hamilton College on Saturday, posting a 3-0 (25-20, 25-6, 25-18) win over the host Continentals before falling 3-1 (25-19, 21-25, 26-24, 25-13) to Middlebury in the afternoon.

Bates finishes with a 2-8 conference record but a 16-9 mark overall, the Bobcats' best record since the 2003 season when they were 26-9.

In the win over Hamilton, senior Liz Leberman (Concord, N.H.) hammered a match-high 10 kills and senior Tess Dokus (Fairport, N.Y.) added nine to lead Bates to its seventh win in its last eight matches. Hamilton (5-29, 0-10) ended its season on a five-game losing skid.

First-year Nicole Russell (Boca Raton, Fla.) had a team-high 10 digs and sophomore Grace Haessler (Portland, Ore.) was credited with 27 assists for the Bobcats. Haessler led a 16-ace attack with five and junior Rachel Colby (Willimantic, Conn.) chipped in four.

Amanda Cohen '13 paced the Continentals with six kills and two blocks.

In the loss to Middlebury, senior Avery Masters (Mill Valley, Calif.) had a team-high nine kills, while Leberman added eight kills and 12 digs. Sophomore Chrissy Gee (San Francisco, Calif.) had eight kills, while Dokus and sophomore Olivia Schow (Costa Mesa, Calif.) had seven kills apiece, with Schow adding in two aces. Russell had 11 digs and Haessler totaled 35 assists with nine digs and two aces. Jane Handel led the Panthers (20-5, 7-3 NESCAC) with 13 kills.

It was the final match for four senior Bobcats: Dokus, Brit Johnston (Winter Park, Colo.), Leberman and Masters.
