Volleyball storms past UNE at Bates Classic, 3-1







LEWISTON, Maine -- The Bates College volleyball team weathered a first-set loss and ran off three straight sets for a 3-1 victory over the University of New England in the first round of the four-team Bates Volleyball Classic on Friday night.

The visiting Nor'easters (8-13) surged from a 20-15 deficit to win the first set 25-23. But Bates built and maintained comfortable leads by the midway part of each of the remaining three sets, winning by scores of 25-21, 25-18 and 25-17.

Bates senior Liz Leberman (Concord, N.H.) led three Bobcats in double figures in kills with 13, to go with 14 digs. Sophomore Olivia Schow (Costa Mesa, Calif.) added 12 kills to go with two service aces. Senior Tess Dokus (Fairport, N.Y.) had 11 kills and a season-high five blocks, while senior Avery Masters (Mill Valley, Calif.) had eight kills and also recorded a season high in blocks with six.

Sophomore Grace Haessler (Portland, Ore.) had 44 assists along with a pair of aces and a pair of blocks. First-year Nicole Russell (Boca Raton, Fla.) had a team-high 19 digs and three aces, and senior Brit Johnston (Winter Park, Colo.) contributed seven digs. Junior Rachel Colby (Willimantic, Conn.) also had three service aces.

Bates (13-7) will host Johnson & Wales tomorrow at 10 a.m., followed by Maine Maritime at 12:30 p.m. UNE will face Maine Maritime at 10 a.m., followed by Johnson & Wales at 12:30 p.m.

In Friday night's other match, Johnson & Wales coasted past Maine Maritime 3-0 (25-6, 25-21, 25-22).
