Volleyball sweeps Colby in conference match

LEWISTON, Maine -- The Bates College volleyball team swept rival Colby College 3-0 to gain its first NESCAC victory of the season on Wednesday eveningat Alumni Gymnasium. The Bobcats held on to win the first game 25-22 over the Mules, then controlled the final two games 25-14 and 25-12.

Leading the way for Bates were senior captains Liz Leberman (Concord, N.H.), with 14 kills, eight digs and two blocks, and Tess Dokus (Fairport, N.Y.), with nine kills. Fellow seniors Avery Masters (Mill Valley, Calif.) had six kills and two blocks and Brit Johnston (Winter Park, Colo.) came up with seven digs. Sophomore Olivia Schow (Costa Mesa, Calif.) had six kills and served three aces. Fellow sophomore Chrissy Gee (San Francisco, Calif.) recorded five kills. First-year Nicole Russell (Boca Raton, Fla.) led the Bates back row with nine digs. Sophomore Grace Haessler (Portland, Ore.) set the tone offensively for the Bobcats by dishing out 38 assists.

Colby was led by sophomore Caitlin Burchill (Walpole, Mass.) with three kills and 10 digs. Senior Megan Conroy (San Francisco, Calif.) and first-year Emily Ten Eyck (Minnetrista, Minn.) both had nine digs apiece. Juniors Clare Reich (Piedmont, Calif.) and Hannah Bowman (Hampden-Sydney, Va.) both recorded eight digs. First-year Margaret Taylor (Cabin John, Md.) made three blocks.

Bates improves to 12-7 overall and 1-6 in NESCAC play. The Bobcats will host the Bates Classic this upcoming weekend with its first match Friday night at 7 p.m. against the University of New England.

Colby falls to 6-14 overall and 0-7 in the NESCAC. The Mules will play in the Hall of Fame tournament in South Hadley, Mass., on Friday against Westfield State at 7 p.m.
