Volleyball sweeps first two matches of the season

WATERVILLE, Maine -- The Bates College volleyball team opened the 2009 season by sweeping two matches in the Colby Invitational on Friday. The Bobcats opened by defeating UMaine-Farmington 3-0 (25-21, 25-11, 25-9) before vanquishing UMaine-Presque Isle 3-0 (25-13, 25-11, 25-18).

First-year middle blocker Eliza Pyne (Atherton, Calif.) led the Bobcats in kills with in both matches, while sophomore setter Grace Haessler (Portland, Ore.) paced the Bobcats with 27 assists in both matches, with four service aces against UMF.  Sophomore Olivia Schow had seven kills, while senior Liz Leberman (Concord, N.H.) contributed five kills and seven digs and first-year Nicole Russell (Boca Raton, Fla.) totaled 10 digs and five aces.

Senior Tess Dokus (Fairport, N.Y.) had seven kills in the win over UMPI. Leberman added five kills and eight digs, while junior Rachel Colby (Willimantic, Conn.) had four aces.

Bates will play at tournament host Colby tomorrow at 1:30 p.m.
