Volleyball team outlasts Bowdoin, 3-2





LEWISTON, Maine -- The Bates College volleyball team outlasted Bowdoin College 3-2 in a home non-conference match on Wednesday evening in a steamy Alumni Gymnasium.

The Bobcats (5-2) traded sets with the Polar Bears (5-2), with Bowdoin taking the first and third sets (25-23 and 25-17) while Bates won the second and fourth sets (25-22 and 25-20). The Bobcats took early command of the final set and finished strong with a 15-7 set win and the overall match.

Bates sophomore Grace Haessler (Portland, Ore.) led the Bobcats with 46 assists and eight digs. Senior Tess Dokus (Fairport, N.Y.) provided 14 kills for the Bobcats. Sophomore Olivia Schow (Costa Mesa, Calif.) contributed 11 kills and four aces. Senior Liz Leberman (Concord, N.H.) chipped in with eight kills and 14 digs. First-year Nicole Russell (Boca Raton, Fla.) was very active with 31 digs, as was fellow first-year Eliza Pyne (Atherton, Calif.) with 7 kills and three blocks.

Leading the way for Bowdoin was sophomore Kristin Hanczor (Redding, Conn.) with 14 kills. Senior Gillian Page (Mercer Island, Wash.) and first-year Melissa Haskell (Medfield, Mass.) both provided 12 kills. Senior Jenna Diggs (La Jolla, Calif.) recorded 44 assists.

Bates will be back in action on Friday with a home match-up with Maine Maritime Academy at 7 p.m. Bowdoin will play next at the MIT Invitational with matches on Friday and Saturday.
