Amherst tops volleyball in first match of NESCAC weekend

LEWISTON, Maine -- Amherst College won its sixth straight match with a 3-0 (25-12, 25-19, 25-14) NESCAC victory over the Bates College volleyball team Friday evening at Alumni Gymnasium. Amherst rose to 9-1 overall and 1-1 in NESCAC play, and Bates dropped to 5-8 overall and 0-3 in conference play.

Bates sophomore Eliza Pyne (Atherton, Calif.) had a team-high eight kills and two service aces. Junior Grace Haessler (Portland, Ore.) had 15 assists and three kills, while first-year Andrea Lauden (San Francisco, Calif.) came up with three kills and two blocks. Sophomore Caroline Gattuso (North Reading, Mass.) and sophomore Nicole Russell (Boca Raton, Fla.) led the back row defense with 14 and 12 digs, respectively.

Junior Mary Reiser (New York, N.Y.) led the Amherst attack with eight kills, and added two block assists. Sophomore Kristin Keeno (Honolulu, Hawaii) and junor Cristy Meier (San Anselmo, Calif.) added seven kills apiece, with Keeno also coming up with three service aces and Meier adding two solo blocks. Senior Jackie Berkley (Fullerton, Calif.) chipped in six kills, and senior Laura Hyman (Glencoe, Ill.) added five kills and a pair of solo blocks.

Senior Rachel Yorke (Los Angeles, Calif.) led the back row with 20 digs, followed by senior Erin Camp (Santa Monica, Calif.) with 11 and first-year Devin Pence (Los Angeles, Calif.) with eight. Sophomore Callie Neilson (Escondido, Calif.) dished out 34 assists.

Bates plays host to another NESCAC rival, Middlebury, on Saturday at 1:30 p.m.; Amherst will meet Colby at Bates beforehand, at 11 a.m.
