Pyne, Gee pace volleyball in 3-2 setback to Wesleyan







HARTFORD, Conn. -- The Bates volleyball team played one of its better matches this season in a NESCAC match against Wesleyan, but the Cardinals prevailed 3-2 (27-25, 17-25, 25-18, 23-25, 15-12) at Trinity College on Friday night.

Wesleyan (9-12, 2-7) picked up its fifth straight win.

Bates sophomore Eliza Pyne (Atherton, Calif.) had career highs with 18 kills and seven blocks in the match, while junior Chrissy Gee (San Francisco, Calif.) added 13 kills, 20 digs and a career-high six blocks.

First-year Jennifer Youngpeter (Mobile, Ala.) handed out 46 assists to go with 12 digs. Sophomore Nicole Russell (Boca Raton, Fla.) and senior Rachel Colby (Willimantic, Conn.) both recorded eight kills and 14 digs apiece, with Russell chipping in two service aces, and sophomore Caroline Gattuso (North Reading, Mass.) added 11 digs.

"We played really well, but just didn't come up with the win," said head coach Brett Allen.

The Bobcats (7-18, 2-6 NESCAC) finish their regular season tomorrow with a pair of matches at Trinity: against Connecticut College at 11 a.m., and against Trinity at 1:30 p.m. They remain in eighth place in the conference, and the top eight teams will play in the NESCAC Volleyball Championship next weekend.
