Volleyball defeats CCNY at NYU Violet Classic

NEW YORK -- The Bates College volleyball team opened play in the NYU Violet Classic on Friday night with a 3-2 (25-19, 15-25, 25-13, 21-25, 15-9) win over CCNY, followed by a 3-0 (25-12, 25-18, 25-14) loss to host NYU.

The Bobcats (3-6) continue play at the tournament on Saturday with a 10 a.m. match against Hunter College, followed by a 12 p.m. contest against Centenary (N.J.).

Match leaders for Bates in the win over CCNY included sophomore Eliza Pyne (Atherton, Calif.), who put away 14 kills, and junior Grace Haessler (Portland, Ore.), who contributed 37 assists, 15 digs and seven service aces. Sophomore Nicole Russell (Boca Raton, Fla.) amassed 10 kills and 32 digs, while junior Chrissy Gee (San Francisco, Calif.) had 11 kills and sophomore Caroline Gattuso (North Reading, Mass.) had 14 more digs.

Against NYU, Russell totaled four kills and 11 digs. Gattuso had 14 digs and Pyne was credited with two kills with six digs.
