Volleyball faces Tufts in NESCAC opener at Colby



WATERVILLE, Maine -- The Bates volleyball team played its NESCAC conference opener against Tufts University on Friday night at Colby College, and the Jumbos registered a 3-0 victory, by set scores of 25-18, 25-14 and 25-11.

Tufts is 4-2 overall heading into Saturday’s 1:30 p.m. match with Colby, while Bates falls to 2-4 and will play again at Colby on Saturday against Bowdoin College at 11 a.m.

Bates sophomore Nicole Russell (Boca Raton, Fla.) led the Bobcats defensively with 13 digs, while sophomore Caroline Gattuso (North Reading, Mass.) had 10 digs. Senior Rachel Colby (Willimantic, Conn.) finished with four kills and five aces, while junior Chrissy Gee (San Francisco, Calif.) had three kills and six digs.

Kendall Lord had 33 assists, eight defensive digs, five kills, and three aces in leading Tufts. The Jumbos were helped out by 12 kills and three aces from Kelly Engelking. Nancy Shrodes ripped seven kills and Audrey Kuan had nine digs.
