Volleyball finishes at 1-3 in Brandeis Invitational







WALTHAM, Mass. -- The Bates College volleyball team finished the season-opening Brandeis Invitational on Saturday with a 1-3 record after a pair of losses, 3-1 (25-19, 25-17, 15-25, 25-18) to Dominican (Ill.) University and 3-0 (27-25, 25-15, 25-19) in a non-conference match against NESCAC rival Williams.

Bates junior captain Chrissy Gee (San Francisco, Calif.) was one of eight players named to the All-Tournament Team. Gee turned in a pair of excellent all-around performances on Friday, as the Bobcats defeated Gordon 3-2 and fell to Brandeis 3-1.

Gee tallied nine kills and 13 digs in the match against Dominican, sophomore Nicole Russell (Boca Raton, Fla.) had eight kills, 17 digs and two aces to pace the Bobcats. Senior Rachel Colby (Willimantic, Conn.) totalled seven kills and nine digs, sophomore Eliza Pyne (Atherton, Calif.) had eight kills and one ace, junior setter Grace Haessler (Portland, Ore.) had 28 assists and nine digs, and sophomore Caroline Gattuso (North Reading, Mass.) came up with 10 digs.

Pyne led the Bobcats in kills against Williams with eight, and she also contributed an ace. Gee added seven kills and seven digs, Russell and Gattuso had 11 digs apiece, Colby had six kills and Haessler totalled 21 assists and six digs.

Bates will play host to another NESCAC rival, Colby, in a non-conference match on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
