ORANGE, Calif. -- The Bates College volleyball team opened a three-match trip to California on Thursday with a 3-0 (25-15, 25-14, 25-16) loss at Division III Chapman University at the Hutton Sports Center.

The Bobcats (7-15) play a pair of matches at Whittier College on Saturday afternoon, against Whittier at 2 p.m. and the University of La Verne at 4 p.m.

Chapman (15-10) won its sixth straight match and 10th in its last 12 overall.

Bates sophomore middle blocker Eliza Pyne (Atherton, Calif.) submitted an effective attacking game, with seven kills and one error out of 15 attempts (.400). Sophomore Nicole Russell (Boca Raton, Fla.) had six kills and first-year Andrea Lauden (San Francisco, Calif.) tied her career highs with five kills and two blocks. Chapman controlled the first set, jumping out to a 6-0 lead, and never trailed. Freshman OH Mady Dahlstrom led the Panthers' offense, recording 13 kills in the match, six of which came in the first set.

The Bobcats (7-15) played much closer in the second set, knotting the score at seven before consecutive kills by sophomore MB Kate Ferrin put the Panthers ahead for good. Ferrin also reached double figures with 10 kills in the match.

Down 13-11 in the third set, Chapman rallied for six straight points to seal the set – and the match – 25-16. Freshman S Corrine Ostrovsky led the Chapman offense with 20 assists while junior libero Alyssa Swatek tallied a match-high 16 digs for the Panthers.
