Volleyball opens with win over Gordon







WALTHAM, Mass. -- The Bates College volleyball team opened the 2010 season on Friday evening with a 3-2 (19-25, 22-25, 25-17, 25-20, 16-14) win over Gordon College at the Brandeis Volleyball Invitational. The Bobcats went on to play Brandeis in the final match of the night and accepted a 3-1 loss (25-16, 25-13, 21-25, 25-23) against the host Judges.

The Bobcats (1-1) will face Dominican on Saturday at 11 a.m., then conclude the Brandeis Invitational with a non-conference match against NESCAC rival Williams at 3 p.m.

A team effort against Gordon included sophomore middle blocker Eliza Pyne (Atherton, Calif.) leading the team in kills with 14 and adding three blocks. Junior Chrissy Gee (San Francisco, Calif.) totaled 13 kills, four blocks and 14 digs, while junior setter Grace Haessler (Portland, Ore.) also turned in a stellar all-around performance with 34 assists, eight kills, six aces, two blocks and nine digs. Sophomore Nicole Russell (Boca Raton, Calif.) came up with six kills and 34 digs, senior Rachel Colby (Willimantic, Conn.) added six kills and 15 digs, and sophomore Caroline Gattuso (North Reading, Mass.) chipped in 22 digs.

Gee had another strong performance in the Brandeis match, with 15 kills, an ace and nine digs, while Haessler came up with 33 assists, 16 digs and two blocks. Pyne had nine kills with two aces and three blocks, Colby added nine kills and 17 digs, and Gattuso pitched in with 14 digs.
