Volleyball sweeps Colby for NESCAC victory, 3-0






WATERVILLE, Maine -- Sophomore Nicole Russell (Boca Raton, Fla.) finished with a career-high 16 kills to go with seven digs as the Bates College volleyball team took a 3-0 win over Colby College in New England Small College Athletic Conference action Tuesday night at Wadsworth Gymnasium. The Bobcats won by scores of 25-13, 25-14, 25-23.

Bates moves to 7-14 overall and 2-5 in the conference, firming the Bobcats' eighth-place standing in the conference while the Mules fall to 6-13 and 0-7. The top eight teams qualify for the NESCAC Volleyball Championship, which begins on Nov. 5.

Junior Chrissy Gee (San Francisco, Calif.) added 17 digs and seven kills, while sophomore Eliza Pyne (Atherton, Calif.) finished with eight kills and three blocks for the Bobcats. First-year setter Jennifer Youngpeter (Mobile, Ala.) had 29 assists, 10 digs, and three aces. Sophomore Caroline Gattuso (North Reading, Mass.) added 13 digs.

Maggie Taylor (Cabin John, Md.) led Colby with 18 defensive digs, five kills, and three aces. Caitlin Burchill (Walpole, Mass.) added seven kills and a pair of aces, Clare Reich (Piedmont, Calif.) had 20 digs, Kate Pleasants (Virginia Beach, Va.) finished with 17 assists and three aces, and Kate Bellerose (West Newton, Mass.) had five kills.

The Bobcats next travel to California for a fall semester break trip. The Bobcats play at Chapman University on Thursday at 7 p.m. Pacific time, then face the University of La Verne and Whittier College at Whittier on Saturday.
